3D modeling
Over the past three years, I've been learning 3D modeling using Blender. My interest started with my love for VR and the idea of having my own custom avatar in the games I played. Over time, 3D modeling has become a true passion, pushing my creativity further than I ever imagined.
Here, you can see a game character I created in Blender, and further down, you’ll find a video of the character in motion.
Programs used
Sculpting and retopology
I started by sculpting a base, beginning with the head and experimenting until I was satisfied with the shape. Then, I moved on to the body, using simple shapes as a foundation and gradually refining them. Once I'm happy with the overall form, I connect everything and increase the polygon count to add more detail.
Finally, I go through a process called retopology, which involves recreating or optimizing the mesh structure of the 3D model. In this case, I refine the base I’ve sculpted to ensure it’s optimized for the game engine

Texturing
For texturing, I used Substance Painter to apply textures to my 3D model. First, in Blender, I unwrap my character, which means defining how the texture should be mapped onto the model. A good way to visualize this is by thinking of how a cardboard box unfolds—just like a box has specific cut lines to flatten it, I create seams on my model to guide the texture placement.
This process is often iterative, meaning I go back and forth between Blender and Substance Painter to refine the unwrapping. Adjustments help ensure the textures are applied smoothly and without distortion, resulting in the best possible final look
Video
Once I've completed the model and textures, I import it into Unity to set up physics and test the rigging. This helps me ensure that the bones and animations work correctly. Since this character is simple, I don’t have to worry too much about issues like clothing clipping.
Here is a video of my character in the game VRChat, testing out the face-tracking and movements of the character.
